|
Most of Joe Morley’s compositions do not bear a date,
those that do so offer clues to the publication, if not the actual year of
composition of other works. We can be sure of the period of publication of
Morley’s earliest pieces because they were purchased and published by
Clifford Essex whilst he was in partnership with Alfred Cammeyer this
partnership commenced in 1893 and ended in 1900.
More accurate dating of some of these early pieces
published by Essex and Cammeyer is possible because they are listed on dated
solos, hence we can be almost certain that the following solos were composed
in, or before, 1893 because they are listed on a copy of "In the
Moonlight" which is dated 1893, the numbers are the ones given to the
solos in the E&C lists.

Rayon d’or Polka

These solos must be the ones to which Clifford Essex
referred in his tribute to Joe Morley entitled ‘Poor Old Joe’, which
appeared in the B. M. G. magazine in November, 1937.
In this article Essex stated that he first met Morley
in Sandown, Isle of Wight, in 1891, and that he offered to buy some of
Morley’s compositions, for publication, at this time; Morley, however, did
not supply the solos to Essex for three years.
This means that Essex claims that he did not receive
the solos until 1894 but they are listed on the cover of a banjo solo which
is dated 1893; Essex’ memory may have been at fault here or it is possible
that the solos were added to the list and the amended list was printed on
the reverse of the dated solo after it’s date of first publication.
In addition to these listed solos there are others
published by the E&C partnership which, accordingly, must have been
composed and published prior to 1900, the year that the E&C partnership
was dissolved.

Dance of the Imps*
|
We can make a few deductions from the
position of these solos in the E&C lists, firstly we know that No. 49.
Rayon d’or Polka was probably published in, or before, 1893, so that the
above solos were published (but not necessarily composed) later than this,
No. 85. Varsity Polka, was played by Morley in 1895 so this piece,
presumably, was composed in, or before, that year.
The celebrated banjoists, Parke Hunter
and Cadwallader Mays came to the U.K. in 1896, they are first mentioned in
the E&C lists, in connection with Gregory’s L’Infanta March, which
is No. 109 in the lists.
We may assume that this points to that
solo being published in or around 1896, this means that Cane Brake Dance No.
113, Brooklyn Polka No.146, Firefly Polka No.152, and Festival Dance No.153,
must have been published between 1896 and 1900.
These are all the solos that were
published by E&C.
* Dance of the Imps is interesting from the point of view
that this seems to the only Morley piece published by Cammeyer after the
dissolution of the Essex & Cammeyer partnership. This solo was published
in the Banjo World, Cammeyer's magazine , in September, 1905, and also as a
complete solo, No. 226 in the Cammeyer lists. It does not appear in the Essex & Cammeyer lists
of 1899 or the Cammeyer lists of 1901; it is possible that as Cammeyer
retained the copyright to all the Morley pieces published under the Essex
& Cammeyer banner, this piece may not have been published prior to 1900
and Cammeyer decided to publish at at a later date.
The Burnthwaite Road period
Top of Page
This brings us to the mysterious Burnthwaite Road
publications; Essex and Cammeyer split as a result of an argument about
copyrights, the terms of the dissolution of the partnership meant that Essex
could not start a rival publication to Cammeyer’s "Banjo World"
within three years of the date of the dissolution. There may have been other
restrictions placed on Essex as regards the publication of banjo music and
perhaps this is perhaps how the ‘Burnthwaite Road’ solos came to be
published.
The cover of these solos (I only have one ) has a
picture of a young Joe Morley, he is named as the publisher and his address
is given as 11. Burnthwaite Road, Fulham, London S. W. Click here
to see the cover that was used for these solos.

|
My only solo in this series with the
Morley cover showing the Burnthwaite Rd. address is the ‘Coons Picnic’
this is interesting because the trio of this piece has an optional
arrangement a la Vess Ossman; Ossman first came to the U. K. in 1903 so does
this point to the publication of this piece being after this date? Morley
may have got the idea of arranging the trio in this style after hearing
recordings of Ossman rather than seeing him perform in person.
It has been suggested that the
Burnthwaite Road solos were published by Essex, under Morley’s name, to
avoid conflict with Alfred Cammeyer about copyright, if this is correct, the
publication of these solos would have taken place around the year 1900.
The John Alvey Turner Publications Top of Page
John Alvey Turner published most of
Joe Morley’s compositions, some of these are dated but most are not. We
can set approximate dates for the publication of the undated compositions
using Turner’s changes of address and the serial number of the composition
in the Turner lists.
John Alvey Turner started as a
publisher of music, in general, sometime in the mid nineteenth century at
the following addresses, 1a, Leadenhall Street and later, 19, Cornhill.
Turner seems to have concentrated his efforts into publishing banjo music
and selling banjos in the 1870’s/80’s when he established his business
in Crosby Hall, becoming the main banjo related music business in the U. K.
John Alvey Turner, himself, died in 1904.

Tomorrow

This is all of Morley’s work
published by Turner which I have been able to trace, it would appear that
nothing, composed by Morley, was published by Turner after 1933, perhaps
Clifford Essex published Morley’s last few compositions, some, of course,
were never published.
Some of Morley’s last compositions
such as ‘Mr. Punch’ were played and recorded by the Kentucky Minstrels,
so they were obviously considered to have some musical merit, the reason for
them remaining unpublished is unclear, the popularity of the five stringed
banjo by this time must certainly have been on the decline and the demand
for new publications probably limited.
Morley’s solos are listed on the
most common of the various covers used by Turner for his banjo publications,
this shows a picture of Morley on the right and a list of his solos on the
left. The earliest number I have listed in this format is 400 the ‘Ashantee
March’ and the latest is 893 ‘Apple Blossoms’.
Clifford Essex Publications Top of Page
Dating the Clifford Essex
publications, in most instances, is difficult, little reliance can be placed
on the address printed on the solo as some of the solos remained popular
enough to remain in print over many years and consequently, through several
changes of address.
It seems that all the Morley solos
published by Essex were published between 1900 and 1936, a few pieces were
printed, or reprinted in the B. M. G. magazine in later years.
In the early years of the Essex
company, the solos were numbered, this number is given, where it is known,
immediately before the title.
Some solos do bear a date, where this
is so I have listed it, in all cases I have tried to give the earliest
address which I can find on a particular solo.
Bearing in mind that Joe Morley died
in 1937 and that Clifford Essex was at the Grafton Street address until 1936
it seems unlikely that much remained unpublished by Essex at the time of
Morley’s death.
There will have been some solos which
appeared as supplements to BMG in later years which were not published
elsewhere.
The main point of interest in this
chronological listing of the Essex publications is that it shows that Morley’s
solos were still in demand long after his death and that it was still
financially worthwhile for the Clifford Essex company to print new copies
with the amended address.
The addresses, in chronological order,
are: -
|
1900 - 1936
|
15a
|
Grafton Street.

|
1936 - 1942

Morley which I have traced is 238, no doubt there are a few more to come to
light; some pieces, such as ‘Shuffle Along’ are known by other titles
(American Glide), this makes it difficult to put an accurate figure on the
final total of compositions.
There are other complications, is the
‘Pimpernel’ mazurka, No. 385, published by Dallas the same composition
as the ‘Pimpernel’ mazurka listed as No. 822 in the Turner lists?
Some authorities claim that some of
the pieces in the Turner lists were never printed/published, these include
‘Malmaison’ mazurka, ‘Bal Masque’, ‘ Electra’ and ‘Popinjay’,
etc. In the main list I have put ‘not seen-listed on Pall’ March’
against these titles; this refers to the earliest Turner list I have which
is on the front cover of a copy of ‘Palladium March’ this list includes
many of these doubtful solos.
