Hartshead Morris takes its name from Hartshead Villlage which lies roughly between Leeds and Huddersfield in West Yorkshire.

The team was formed in September of 1977 after members of the Hartshead Traditional Society saw Morris Dancers in the village during the Queen's Silver Jubilee celebrations.

Originally all male, the team became mixed in early 1978 and first danced in public at Denby Dale in November of that year.

We perform a range of dances from Lancashire and Cheshire, this style of dancing is known as North-west or clog morris and was originally danced by Mill workers in the 19th. century . North-West  was often undertaken in association with Rushbearing, when new rushes would be taken to the local church.

In recent years there has been a revival of the "Rushcarts" and Hartshead Morris has been involved in some of these.

We have also travelled extensively throuhgout the country, dancing at many events including School Galas, Folk Festivals and with other Morris teams, the latter have always been particularly enjoyable and have opened up many new friendships.

After more than 20 years,  Hartshead Morris danced for the last time in 2002.

The remaining members requested that these pages should be left up as a memorial to one of the finest North-West sides.
