Morris Dancing Among the many styles of traditional dancing found in England there are four which are known as Morris. Each style takes its name from the part of England where it originated. Cotswold morris a Southern English dance style of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire, is the type most often seen, with it's characteristic high leaps and waving handkerchiefs. The Eastern counties are where a form of Morris called Molly can be found. Border Morris comes from the English/Welsh border counties, hence the name. In this style of dancing, performers traditionally blacken their faces. Speculation as to the reason for this claims that the term "Morris" is a corruption of "Moor-ish", from the North African people of that name. Another distinctive characteristic are the tatter jackets worn by the dancers. These are composed of multi-coloured strips of tattered cloth. The costume, as a whole, could also act as a disguise in the days when the dancers asked for money, drank to excess and were denounced, by the church, for dancing on Sundays. Border Morris dances are usually performed with heavy wooden sticks which are clashed together, often accompanied by shouts from the dancers. No-one knows exactly when North-West Morris began or what it's original purpose was, but there are reports dating back to the 18th century which mention Morris dancers taking part in processions which were a feature of local holidays and festivals. Consequently, the dances have a figure specially designed to move the dancers along the road together with more elaborate figures which are performed when the procession is stationary. North-West Morris is much heavier in character than other forms of Morris dancing mainly because, while some teams in the past ware shoes, many the standard footwear of factory workers, clogs. The rhythmic noise of the iron-shad clogs is such a distinctive feature of this tradition that it is often called "Clog Morris". In addition to these styles Rapper dancing, which is performed with chart two handled awards forming Intricate patterns, and Longsword dancing can be found. The origins of this type of dance are in the North-East of England.
